Every year the day after Christmas, we load up the kids & dogs, make the 4 ½ hour drive to our home away from home, and prepare to ring in the New Year hunting and catching up on much needed rest and relaxation! This year was a bit different because we allowed our kids to bring a friend along. We had three extra kids for the entire week –six kids total, and this gal was worn out when it was all said and done! All three friends of the kids wanted to hunt, and only one of the three had hunted in the past! Mike & I were excited about the opportunity to share the outdoors with the new-comers… Cody, Emily & Tanner.

MaKenna & Georgia-Kate’s friend, Emily, started off with a doe harvest on New Year’s Eve. She was extremely excited about her first hunting adventure & was so proud of her doe! Way to go girl! Our youngest followed up the next day & shot a buck we now call “The New Year’s Day Buck”-Mike and I are proud of her and truly believe she started the New Year off right!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SWv9d0-dhZI/AAAAAAAAAE0/nNJHAl2x-mo/s320/IMG_0136.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290600876155438482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 233px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SWv9dp4iODI/AAAAAAAAAEs/ebLUCGmXMmk/s320/GK4.jpg-rs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290600873177790514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SWv9dQB1khI/AAAAAAAAAEk/TL-QyW8K_80/s320/G%26E.jpg-rs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290600866237485586" />
Emily & Georgia-Kate

After the girls harvested their deer, the boys started getting a little bit antsy! Every year we head down to the ranch in south Texas for a week-we hunt, relax, eat, laugh and make memories! I will always remember this Thanksgiving because my middle daughter, MaKenna(who turned 11 years old this month),shot her first buck with a bow. MaKenna and Mike hunted hard and luckily for her she harvested an awesome buck two days after Thanksgiving...she has a lot to be thankful for! We have been busy filming for Dream Season "Redemption" this season and have traveled quite a bit-so it was nice to be home in Texas, hunting with the kids and just enjoying some quality family time...
Way to go MaKenna!!!

Football Fun!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QxFaEH-prvw/SToGQry6oGI/AAAAAAAABWQ/FXDFPMlZqvM/s320/PB160169.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276536797121912930" />
MaKenna & Mike at a chilly November game!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QxFaEH-prvw/SToGQYG6-VI/AAAAAAAABWI/RQB-bOdwJnQ/s320/PB160174.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276536791837112658" />
Christian waiting to go in...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QxFaEH-prvw/SToGQK1wl0I/AAAAAAAABWA/hokmzTZxxZk/s320/PB160163.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276536788275468098" />
Mom & Dad...enjoying the game!

Over the last four years Mike & I have become good at juggling our oldest's football games and our crazy hunting schedule! My hunting season started off with a trip to Alberta to chase after mule deer with my husband Mike. This season, we are filming for Dream Season 6 "Redemption" a show which will air on the Outdoor Channel Summer '09 produced by Drury Outdoors, ScentBlocker & ScentShield! Mike & I participated in Dream Season 4"Couples"(available on DVD @ www.druryoutdoors.com) two years ago and had a wonderful experience and we're looking forward to this season! Unfortunately we had to return to Houston four days into our mule deer hunt due to Hurricane Ike. We made it back home on the last flight into Houston from Calgary on the same day Ike was due to make landfall! We hunkered down with family (about 20 of us & 8 dogs) and rode out the storm. Luckily, our home was not damaged, but we were without electricity for 13 days! My three children were out of school for two weeks and besides being inconvenienced a bit they had a blast on their unexpected "holiday"!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SOIuAIsZl5I/AAAAAAAAAD0/MeHGCqDLFVE/s320/Mike-Alberta+%2708.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251810695336007570" />
My hunting partner & hubby Mike in Alberta!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SOIuAA3XhhI/AAAAAAAAAD8/XCaLacGl8GQ/s320/Bon-3-rs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251810693234525714" />

Opening Weekend in Texas! A buck we named "Big Boy" had made an appearance on several Reconyx pics and was frequenting a water source close to one of our set-ups. There was no doubt where we would be sitting opening morning. Morning came and with me hunting & Mike behind the camera, "Big Boy" made an appearance late in the hunt. Last year on Dream Season 11, Mike had encouraged me to let him walk & was I ever glad I did! He presented me with a 25 yard shot & the PSE X-Force took care of business! The buck was scored by a Boone & Crockett scorer at 195 5/8 & nets 190 7/8. I celebrated my first velvet buck, my first opening day buck & my biggest buck ever!

August News!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SKOwyQMFANI/AAAAAAAAAC0/c-P1UXIVDMQ/s320/IMG_7777.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234221569320222930" />
A hunting gal & her jeep!

August Update!

The weather in Texas has been crazy this past month, but thankfully we dodged Hurricane Dolly & Tropical Storm Edouard only brought lots of rain to our area. We were grateful for the rain Dolly dumped on our lease in south Texas, and while it didn’t bring us out of drought conditions it did help the grass grow just in time for our fawns to drop with an ample amount of cover. Edouard passed directly over us at home, but did not do any damage. Besides watching systems form in the Gulf, I’ve been busy getting the kids ready to go back to school. We’ve already hit the mall for clothes, Wal-Mart for school supplies and I must say I am about shopped out! Our oldest kicked off his 4th and final season of Pee-Wee football two weeks ago and he is in full pads practicing in the hot Texas sun! Gotta love it! I sent my middle daughter off to church camp this week and after a few tears she & I said “Goodbye” for a week…I know she will have a ball. I didn’t make the ranch (lease) trip last weekend with my husband & son…I was too busy doing all my “Mom” duties. I told them to be sure and bring back some pictures from the Reconyx trail cams we put out the last time we were down. I couldn’t wait to go through all the photos and see what we had captured! I smiled when I saw a doe nursing her fawn. I guess the does on our place are taking care of “Mom” duties too! I was really excited about the pics that had the two of them in it…Mike and I talked about it and we don’t recall ever having a doe and a fawn in the same image on a trail cam photo. Another interesting picture the Reconyx captured was a doe inside the water tank…the thermometer reads 104 ° …I guess she needed a break from the hot Texas sun! Bow season kicks off here in Texas on September 27th…Mike and I will be in south Texas that weekend! I'll have my Lady Dream Season suit on & be ready to roll…now the big question…who is up to bat? Maybe this hunting gal can talk him into being a gentleman and letting me go first! ScentBlocker launched a new feature on their website which enables me to blog about myself and update readers on my day to day life. I am thrilled about the opportunity to blog as a female hunter whose hunting partner is my husband and as a hunting gal who loves the outdoors! I think this is a great addition to the website. Another bit of exciting information is that ScentBlocker launched a new ladies line for women hunters. Fellow hunting gals just like me are now able to choose from awesome new outdoor gear. My goal is to encourage other female hunters in their outdoor adventures and spike the interest of non-hunters to get outside and enjoy the sport of hunting!

Last week, I received my Lady Dream Season suit in the mail, and I can not express how incredible it was to put on camo that is made for a female, fits my body well, and will do the job in the outdoors too! Kudos to ScentBlocker! I am looking forward to the ’08 hunting season in my new Lady Dream Season suit.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SHZcd1-Hw6I/AAAAAAAAABM/d10Nrc5GgBA/s320/P7090004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221462485756265378" />

On the hunting front, we managed to make a weekend trip to our lease in south Texas and Mike was able to hang a few Reconyx trail cameras in our favorite hunting locations. Once again, there was much tractor work to be done in preparation for deer season, and we are still in the process of mowing roads so we can get to our favorite spots.

Every other week or so, we hire a babysitter to watch the kids for the evening so we can go out on what we call “Date night’. Usually we catch a movie or grab a bite to eat but this past “Date Night” we visited our local archery shop and starting warming up the PSE’s! This time of year I start shooting a lot of practice arrows so I’ll be accurate and confident when deer season rolls around. I was so excited when I shot my first “robin hood” with my PSE X-Force bow….maybe it will be my good luck charm this season! I can’t seem to wipe the grin off my face….yep; deer season is just around the corner!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SHZcr2xn8bI/AAAAAAAAABU/egsAfDg6G9c/s320/Robin+Hood+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221462726490452402" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_extUPfqeGIY/SHZdauYSB3I/AAAAAAAAABk/1k8cfPkiGe8/s320/IMG_7020.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221463531690526578" />
My first antelope! I'm most likely not much different from many of you ladies who juggle family, friends, work and a hobby we all love...hunting! Raised in Texas, I live in Kingwood with my husband Mike (also a big hunter) and our three children, Christian, MaKenna and Georgia-Kate. Mike and I are a "hunting couple" and Drury Outdoors Team Members. We have been hunting together for ten years and filming our hunts since 2003.

This summer has proven to be a typical Texas summer...it's hot! Despite the heat, we have managed to travel to our lease in south Texas and begin preparation for deer season.Some might argue it's a bit early to be thinking about whitetail deer, but around the McFerrin house deer season is always on our minds. Late May early June is the time of year when my husband, Mike, likes to start working on food plots. He enjoys getting on his tractor with one of the kids in tow, and begins to prepare the ground for our fall planting. Over the years, we have been asked by fellow hunters how we are able to harvest mature bucks on our free-ranging hunting property. The answer lies in Mike's strict management plan and much of that includes time on the tractor. He really enjoys being in the outdoors preparing for deer season, and I am always happy watching him work because I know it's "therapy" for him. As crazy as this might sound, I like to "spruce up" the house before deer season ramps up. It seems like every year after turkey season ends; I take a good look around and realize the house needs a good cleaning. All of our hunting gear needs to be re-organized and put in its place. We seem to accumulate piles of Scent Blocker gear, Drury Outdoors caps & shirts, and a lot of other hunting accessories. Throughout the year it starts to pile up and before I know it- it's a mess! On our most recent trip down south we took the kids out riding around and scouted the property. They love to load up in the Jeep and look for deer. We saw a few bucks in velvet, does, javelina, road runners, turkeys and hogs. Hunting season is a few months away and we are getting pumped!
The first weekend in June, Mike & I traveled t0 Las Vegas and met up with Mark & Tracy Drury and other Drury Team Members. I can't remember the last time the two of us took a trip where we weren't hunting and we had a blast! It was so nice to be with fellow hunters in a different setting. We enjoyed the restaurants, shows, all that Vegas has to offer and of course,we talked about hunting.

So far my summer has been relaxing and enjoyable. I have spent much needed "down time" with my kids. My husband and I enjoyed ourselves on a weekend get-a-away to Las Vegas and we've traveled to our lease as a family to prepare for deer season. Not much more this hunting gal could ask for... I'll be the first to say...I am blessed!
